My name is actually Jennifer O'Connor, but everyone calls me Jenno. Like a lot of folks, I got (back) into yarn crafting during the pandemic, when so many things that used to take me out of the house suddenly stopped. With all that newly free time on my hands, I found my way into a whole community of knitters and crocheters, teachers, designers, yarn shops, and dyers, all on the internet, while bemoaning the lack of a proper yarn shop that was truly local to me in the Wilmington, Delaware metro area. Sure, I knew I could go down-state or out of state or shop online for yarn, but I thought, a county of almost six hundred thousand people must be able to sustain an LYS! Then one day it occurred to me that maybe I should do something about that?
I had spent thirty-ish years in Corporate America, and my only experience in retail was working in a grocery store as a teenager. I had a lot to learn, and I... quickly got overwhelmed. It’s been quite the journey of self-discovery these last few years, and one of these days we’ll have story time about that. What matters now, though, is that I finally have a lease for a space in my dream location, and a genuine, bona fide Local Yarn Shop in northern Delaware is almost here!
The word ministry has two meanings...
The first is ministry as in headquarters, the place from which something is administered. Think: ministry in the sense of a British government department, like Monty Python's Ministry of Silly Walks, or in the Harry Potter universe, the Ministry of Magic. It's where you go to find out about the thing, get the stuff for the thing, and meet people who also work with the thing.
The second is ministry in the sense of tending to or caring for both ourselves and others. Whether we're making something to keep, to give to a loved one, or to donate to someone in need, knitting and crochet let us express creativity, relax and relieve stress, occupy our time or attention in a productive way, and find joy and fulfillment to charge up our internal batteries.
